Because there are so many things to do and see, it’s a good thing! We’ve compiled a list of my favourite things to do in Puerto Escondido, and we think you’ll agree. There are a whole lot of things going on with Things to do in Puerto Escondido.

Plankton scuba diving with bioluminescent fish

Because we believe it is the most popular activity in Puerto Escondido, we put swimming with bioluminescent plankton at the top of my list. I highly recommend seeing the bioluminescent plankton if you’ve never seen it before.

The tour at Puerto Escondido, Mexico is on bioluminescent plankton.

Instead of swimming in the ocean, plankton will be found in a freshwater lake. I feel like I’m swimming in a sea of glitter every time I move the plankton. It’s hard to put into words, but it’s awesome!

To prevent being taken advantage of, make an online reservation in advance. In Puerto Escondido, it is possible to rent a room with a salesperson who walks the beach, but they will try to charge you as much as possible. Even if you’re able to secure a fantastic deal, you’re likely to end up with a huge group of people and a tour leader who doesn’t understand English.

There are several beautiful beaches in Puerto Escondido, each with its own distinct set of attractions and activities because of its position on the Pacific coast of Mexico.

Punta Zicatela Beach, with its tremendous waves, is the most well-known of the area’s numerous gorgeous and well-worth-a-visit beaches. Each of these beaches is easily accessible by foot or within a twenty-minute drive in a car, scooter, or taxi.

In part 2, we’ll go over the finest beaches in Puerto Escondido for surfing, but for now, let’s focus on the best beaches in Puerto Escondido for relaxing and having fun!

Take a Dolphin Observation Trip

For dolphin-watching enthusiasts, Puerto Escondido is a must-visit! Hundreds of dolphins may be seen only a few kilometres from Puerto Escondido’s shoreline, just off the coast. As a group, they form a ring around their prey, preventing it from escaping (fish).

We went on a 3- to 4-hour dolphin-watching excursion with an English-speaking guide. We had a great day on the lake thanks to Carlos, our guide.

You may also spot a lot of sea turtles when out on the water. We saw at least 20 turtles, including a handful that were actively reproducing, a process that supposedly lasts for three hours?

On this excursion, you’re likely to feel a little queasy if you’ve ever been seasick or had motion sickness. On a small boat, it’s easy to become seasick because of the big waves. The best way to avoid this is to get some sea sickness medication from a pharmacy in town and take it a half hour before you leave town!

Participate in a fishing tournament

The blue marlin is the most popular sportfish to capture (up to 14-feet long). Thankfully, these species are catch and release only, but you may also capture food-grade fish like red snapper, grouper, or tuna. Alternatively, you may like to store them and cook them on the barbecue that evening.

Getting a hold of a massive blue marlin is an adventure of a lifetime. Although we were unsuccessful in our quest to capture the elusive marlin, we did manage to catch approximately 15 other fish, which we gave to the crew to take back to their loved ones!

A fishing excursion may be booked at one of the numerous tour operator offices in Puerto Escondido or even on the beach. Be careful to haggle for a fair price that includes everything you want.

In the ocean, let go of a baby turtle

In Puerto Escondido, turtle conservation is a major problem. Volunteers patrol 30 kilometres of beaches in Puerto Escondido to ensure that turtle eggs aren’t taken by those who still consume them.
